2019 was a successful year for the Marissa Rec Area. The lakes maintained a good level due to generous rainfall in both 2018 and 2019 and the golf course was in great shape. Volunteers stepped up with landscaping on the golf course, keeping the grounds in shape and with clearing limbs & trees downed during storms. We gained a few new members, including campers.
2020 has had a slow start with the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic. We were mandated to close the golf course, the clubhouse & were not able to open the camper area on the usual date, April 1. Plans were being made to open on May 1 with some restrictions.
The Beautification Committee and other volunteers continue their efforts to improve the grounds, golf course, and tee block areas with new plants including Azaleas, Lilies, and Hostas. They accomplished the Gatehouse Project in 2018 with a new roof, paint, and sign at the entrance. In 2019 several members volunteered their time and energy to improve the landscaping around some of the tees on the golf course.
The Social Committee, whose primary financial goal is to install a new playground at the Marissa Rec Area, provided funds to restore electrical service to the big pavilion between the north and south lakes. The old pavilion east of the south lake was cleaned up and painted to use for beer sales at the Cars & Crafts event.
In 2020, the committee will install the playground equipment that they were able to purchase in late 2019.
Social Committee Activities
This Marissa Rec group continues to provide us with activities. The big three weekends are historically Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.
Plans were already in motion to have the 2020 Marissa Rec Rustic 5K and fishing derbies on opening day but all plans for activities at the MRA came to a grinding halt with the arrival of the COVID-19 restrictions all over the state. Opening Day Activities this year are contingent upon the state restrictions and will be announced later.
Season kick-off in 2018 featured our first Marissa Rec Rustic 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk on May 26. It was a success with 65 participants. Brats and hot dogs were sold for lunch and the afternoon activities continued with the Children's Fishing Derby, the Adult Fishing Derby ending with live music and refreshments at the Club House. The 2nd Marissa Rec Rustic 5K, 1-Mile Fun Run and Kid's Fishing Derby were held again on opening day in 2019. The Rustic races were even more successful with 85 participants on opening day in 2019. Those events were followed by lunch and a fishing derby for kids.
Cars & Crafts 2020 is moving to the fall and will be in September. The social committee with the help of many club members held its first Cars & Crafts event on May 5, 2018. This event, which featured over 50 show cars, DJ as well as live music, over 40 craft, food and drink vendors, was well attended by members of the surrounding communities. The 2019 Cars & Crafts was held on Saturday, May 18.
Our Independence Celebration will be determined after we know what happens with current restrictions on activities. Donations, in the past, have helped us to have one of the best fireworks shows in the area. Any donation to this activity can be made at the clubhouse or at a board meeting.
Details of activities will be sent via email. Do we have your email address?
New volunteers are welcome.
